Many companies rely on Search Engine Marketing (SEM) to grow, and for good reason. Between paid advertising ( SEA ) and website optimization for search engines ( SEO ), there are plenty of ways to capture leads and new customers . A marketing definition of SEM therefore requires considering these two acquisition channels, while clearly distinguishing it from Social Media Optimization ( SMO ). We'll explain everything.

SEM: Marketing Definition

Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is a set of communication and customer acquisition techniques, combining organic search engine optimization ( SEO ) and paid advertising ( SEA ).

The idea is to orchestrate these two levers to optimize your marketing ROI and strengthen your position against the competition.

  • Le SEO builds your visibility over the long term.
  • Le SEA accelerates your results instantly.

SEO: Long-term web visibility

SEO is the art of making a website appear on search engines like Google, Bing, Ecosia, Lilo, Qwant, etc. Why? To attract internet users entering keywords into the search bar and generate qualified traffic… since these users are already potentially interested in your business.

To do SEO, you must respect the 250+ ranking criteria of Google's algorithm, traditionally divided into 3 distinct pillars:

  • Optimization technical of your site
  • The creation of content high-end quality
  • Building your authority online

This involves writing high value texts, meeting the expectations of mobile and internet users, working on your internal linking , improving user experience (UX), loading speed, obtaining qualified backlinks, etc.

SEA: The online paid advertising channel

Search engine advertising ( SEA) allows you to buy qualified traffic through targeted ads. Unlike organic search engine optimization (SEO ), you pay when a user clicks on your ad.

The main platforms for your campaigns:

  • Google Ads for search engines
  • Bing Ads for B2B targets
  • LinkedIn Ads for decision-makers

The key to success? Targeting search intent , considering CPC (Cost Per Click), and tracking your campaigns . You need to know who is visiting your landing and sales pages, which keywords they're using, and when… But also whether your landing pages are compelling and converting readers! You can even use the SCARF method to optimize your ads.

What is the difference between SEM and SMO?

You might be wondering… because that's starting to be a lot of acronyms! SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and SMO (Social Media Optimization) target two distinct areas of digital marketing. SEM optimizes your presence on search engines, while SMO develops your influence on social media.

A quick recap? You have several acquisition levers in short:

  • SEM: natural and paid referencing on Google, Bing, etc. (SEO + SEA)
  • SEO: optimizing content for search engines
  • SEA: targeted advertising
  • SMO: engagement on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook

Avoid spreading yourself too thin! It's better to focus on one or two channels that work than to try to do everything at once. This applies to both your overall marketing strategy and your sector-specific choices. Don't hesitate to make good use of A/B testing to optimize all your processes.

Search Everywhere and AI: A New Marketing Paradigm?

Since 2022 and the democratization of Artificial Intelligence (AI ) tools, the landscape has changed dramatically. Digital marketing is no longer just about Google, Facebook, and email marketing . Customers search for information differently, and with the help of ChatGPT, Claude, Bard, and Copilot, the way your customers find information is being transformed. Search is becoming conversational , multi-platform , and powered by generative AI tools.

How can you integrate these AI channels into each stage of your marketing process ? Here are some general best practices:

  • Optimize content and materials for both humans AND AI (clear structure, verifiable data, demonstrated expertise).
  • Adapt your content to new interfaces like Voice Search, ChatGPT Plugins, and Bing Chat. Yes, voice search is on the rise!
  • Develop your presence where your customers are looking (TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, marketplaces)
  • Create distinctive, multi-format content using infographics, interactive visuals, questionnaires, videos, etc.
  • Etc.

That said, it all starts with your Buyer Persona . Where are they? On AI tools? On social media, search engines? The most important thing is to start with the human element…

…And, speaking of people, Ellevate promotes marketing based first and foremost on people . And also, to some extent, on neuroscience , since it underlies all human relationships, which are themselves the foundation of business relationships. We believe that trust in others is the primary driver of success, even more so in the age of robots and automation.

In its marketing definition, SEM encompasses powerful acquisition channels (SEO and SEA) . But more broadly, it includes human interaction, AI, and your business's specific positioning. If you need support to combine these factors, contact Ellevate to take your marketing strategy to the next level.
